ReSurfaced: A Pop-Up Plaza on Main

Surface parking and large vacant lots have greatly weakened our urban fabric. From downtown extending out to our city’s neighborhoods, these underutilized spaces continue to pose challenges for creating vibrant places and connected communities. Through the ReSurfaced initiative, we are exploring creative ways to pre-vitalize these vacant and underutilized spaces by creating low-cost investments that activate the space NOW rather than waiting for big, long-term developments to take shape.

In the Spring of 2013, during Mayor Fischer’s week of service, a group of dedicated volunteers came together to help map and collect data for all of downtown Louisville’s trees. Some of these volunteers came back and worked through the summer of 2013 to finish collecting data on location, size, planting environs, and health. Upon launching, we wanted to have something that fit that mold, and that is how Louisville Love came to be.
